“The Freygish-tuned karimba plays delightful songs, mostly in C harmonic minor. This instrument brings alive baroque melodies and harmonies, romantic music box waltzes, fiery Middle-Eastern music, and hot Latino cumbia – nostalgic, sensual, mysterious and sweet. This karimba plays unique music that is not played by any other.” (From the back cover of the Freygish karimba download.)
The instrument that you can hear right now, which is playing in the video below, is the Freygish karimba, and the song is “Music Box Farewell,” which is the last composition in the Freygish Download.
If you don’t know about the Freygish Karimba, come on in and listen to what it does and learn a bit about this wonderful gem of an instrument.
The Freygish karimba, or more accurately, the “Freygish-tuned karimba,” is a regular African-tuned karimba set up according to the Freygish tuning, which was first implemented on a karimba by the New Age music artist called SaReGaMa. “Freygish” is a type of traditional Middle Eastern musical scale. Exactly what is the Freygish tuning? In my mind, the Freygish tuning is really a C harmonic minor scale, but you can also play this instrument in G, making it a Middle Eastern scale, also known as the Freygish scale. Either way, C minor or G Middle Eastern, it is a fresh and exotic tuning.
When I first encountered the Freygish karimba, I found this instrument immensely charming and I was inspired to write a body of music for it, and so was born the Freygish Instructional Download – 68 pages packed with music, exercises, illustrations, compositions and karimba wisdom. Of all the SaReGaMa karimba tunings that are available, I still love the Freygish the most, and even now, I still often take my morning walk with a Freygish karimba to play and meditate during my amble.
Kalimba Magic is pleased to announce that the original Freygish download has been upgraded and enhanced; its tablature has been cleaned up and you can click right on song titles to download MP3s, among other improvements. Besides, the music in this collection is incredibly beautiful – some of which was composed by yours truly and some is from other sources.
The download begins with the basics, starting out with very simple exercises that also teach you about music theory as it relates to this particular instrument. The material quickly progresses into cute little things you can do on the Freygish kalimba, followed by my adaptations of existing songs in the harmonic minor and my own heartfelt compositions of increasing complexity.
If you have already purchased the Freygish download, you can go back through your old emails from Kalimba Magic (in 2015) and find the notification with the download link, and you should be able to download it again and replace your old PDF with the newest version (v7). If you don’t have the download, you can click on the link at the bottom of this article to purchase Version 7.
Anyone who has a Freygish karimba but doesn’t own the download should definitely get it! And if you don’t have the Freygish Karimba, I can give you an enthusiastic “thumbs up” on this exotic instrument and the music it plays.
