Description

A set of three 5-note kalimbas, each tuned to different complimentary chords that can simply make beautiful complex songs.

We can tune them to any chords you want (as long as it isn’t too rich – there are only 5 notes).   Feel free to contact us and discuss chord possibilities, or when you purchase these you can make your chordal desires known to us.

These Hokema 5-Note Kalimbas are robust, stay in tune essentially forever, yet the tines are soft and can be played by children, as young as 4 or 5 years old. Each one comes tuned to a different chord, but the real magic comes when you get three or four of these tuned to different complimentary chords that can work together to form a real song.

For example, the standard F minor Choir comes with three kalimbas tuned to the F minor chord (ie, the 1-minor chord), the Bb minor chord (the 4-minor chord) and the C7 chord (the 5 chord). You could color code these three kalimbas with red, blue, and free stickers, and a composer-conductor can then call out the different colors, and the four participants are doing something very symbolic of African music – together, all three people are co-creating something which no single person could have created.

Perfect for people who don’t know anything about music, people who are afraid of music, young children, people who might drop or throw kalimbas – a great activity for a family sitting around working together.
