Release Notes for: Three Original Tunes for the G minor Karimba:
The G minor Karimba was suggested to the world by Gary Diggins. One of my two personal karimbas is in G minor. I find the G minor karimba to be one of my favorite instruments. When I play it, I get a strong sense of being rooted in tradition, but also a mysterious new age sort of feeling.
People also have karimbas in A minor (ie, so it can play with a Sansula or another kalimba in the key of C major, and the tablature here will work for A minor karimbas, though the tones produced by the KTabS program will then be a whole step lower than the karimba's pitches.
This collection of music represents the sorts of things that I play on the G minor karimba when I am walking or playing early in the morning. Try learning the different parts one by one - there are often bite-sized nuggets that you should treat as a koan - a musical riddle that only releases its wisdom over time. So you will also want to come back to each variation or part you learn several times over the course of weeks. I have arranged the different parts into three songs. The songs in this release are written out in an easy-to-read tablature which has all of the tines drawn out, but using standard western rhythmic notation. But the feature of the tablature in this collection which makes it really useful is the fact that it comes in both PDF and KTabS (Kalimba Tablature Software) format. The KTabS computer program for Windows lets you play the KTabS files for each song. KTabS will display the tablature on the screen and play the sound for the song, highlighting the notes as they are played. So, you can hear exactly what the song is supposed to sound like. KTabS is the Guitar Hero of kalimba.
