New Kalimbas from Roots Production in France
Andrew Masters of Roots Production in France has been making kalimbas for over 20 years. His designs are unique - they echo some rustic but refined instruments made in Africa with their handmade, very smooth tines. In fact, these may be the sweetest tines of all to play on.
And once you play the tines, the elliptical metal sardine-can resonator body rings ever so sweetly. Yes, these kalimbas are actually built from sardine cans! Wow!
Kalimba Magic is very happy to carry these kalimbas, with a limited shipment planned for early 2017, and you can preorder one now.
You are listening the the Roots Production Karimba F-15 playing the traditional song "Hwawa."
The Roots Production kalimbas are delightful little creatures. We are starting with two different models: the Mini-9 Kalimba ("Zen Zula") which is perfect for beginners of all ages, and the Karimba F-15 ("KaZula"), a more advanced instrument.
What a charming instrument! When you listen to the sound recordings, don't these instruments shimmer magically? The small body (3" by 5") fits nicely in the hands of children. The smooth tines feel soft on my thumbs. And the sound is so delightful. In a straight major-scale tuning such as the E flat Major, eight of the nine notes are covered in the 8-Note kalimba books we sell.Listen to Mini-9 in E flat Major Tuning Listen to Mini-9 in C4 Tuning
There are many possible tunings for the Mini-9. Expect Ake Bono and Student Karimba tunings to be available soon on this exotic-sounding kalimba base, in addition to the straight major and C4 tunings demonstrated above.
It comes as a pleasant surprise that this relatively small instrument (4" by 6") produces such a full low F - but it does. The metal resonating body makes the notes of this karimba float and shimmer.Listen to Karimba F-15
As a karimba, this instrument plays the repertoire of traditional African songs covered in the "About 30 Traditional African Karimba Songs" book and download. I should note that the pickup that comes standard on this instrument sounds great. And the tines are soft and sweet.
