Chemutengure on the African Karimba

Laina Gumboreshumba is a name you might know. Her father was Andrew Tracey's mbira teacher in the 1960s, and she wrote a masters thesis on Andrew Tracey's contributions to ethnomusicology concerning mbira and karimba.

You may know the song Chemutengure from the CD "Shona Spirit" or perhaps from Paul F. Berliner's book "The Soul of Mbira." It is also included in the 10 Traditional African Pieces for Karimba download.

And now we put Laina and Chemutengure together:

A quick note about the karimbas being played in this video. They are mounted on Alto boxes and are made with Alto tines. The longest Alto tines are longer than the karimba tines, which are made from Treble tines - hence, they can actually be tuned down to F. Also, this is a 15 note instrument - hence, it is identical to the tuning of the Kwanongoma College of African Music instrument made in the 1960s, and identical to the tuning in the appendix of "The Soul of Mbira." Kalimba Magic does not sell this exact instrument, but it could be custom made. The tablature below is for the 17-Note Karimba sold by Kalimba Magic.
