Recording the Kalimba:
Try Routing the Signal Through
an Effects Processor
If you have a pickup on your kalimba, try routing the signal through
a digital guitar effects processor to find out just how weird you can
make it sound. But I also suggest that you put a microphone on it
and record both the affected and the unaffected signals. Later on,
you can mix the signals however you want.
I find that the clarity and the
attack of the kalimba sometimes get "compressed out" in effects processors,
so it is nice to have the unaffected signal to add in.
In order to take two signals into your computer, you will need to have
some sort of special USB sound card that takes multiple inputs, or
you will have to have a converter that takes the two mono signals
and sends them to the 1/8 inch stereo jack input to your computer.
