What's Important in a Groove Track? Subtlety!

When you play to a click track, there is essentially no subtlety to the notes.

Drum machines and drum programs let you add subtlety in many ways. If you have four bass drum hits, you can make some of them louder and some of them softer, hopefully in a way that improves the expressiveness of the drum loop and the music you hope to record on top of it.

Another thing you can do to improve the drum track is to slightly shift the time when one or more drum strikes hit. This is more detailed and less systematic than swing, but it is the same idea.
