Why a Repertoire?

When I first started playing kalimba, I mostly just played improvisationally, running wherever my thumbs wanted to go. I had great moments of flying, sailing, and a lot of moments of crawling in the mud. In other words, my playing was not consistent or reliable. This state lasted for years. I could stand up in front of a crowd at an open mic and I could blow the room away... or I could fall flat on my face.

While I would never give up the improvisational splendor I experience with my own free playing, I will tell you one of the keys to having consistently good performances is to learn reproducible songs. This series of Wednesday tips will help you figure out what sorts of songs you want to learn and how to assemble your own repertoire of kalimba music.
