Building a Gourd Resonator or a Gourd Kalimba:
Introduction
In Africa, the mbira (the traditional
kalimba played by the Shona people) is usually played inside
of a large gourd. This hard-shelled fruit amplifies and modifies the sound of the kalimba very strikingly. In fact, modern kalimbas are often made with a built-in gourd
resonating chamber.
We'll be looking at gourds and how to use them with the kalimba in the coming
weeks and months--so stay tuned!
