You May Write the Names (or Numbers)
of the Notes on your Kalimba Tines
One of my students basically has no formal understanding
of music. He doesn't care which note he is playing, he
just goes off and plays it. He has an intuitive, subconscious
understanding of what to do.
On the other hand, another of my students feels the need to
know where "C" or "G" are on the kalimba - especially if
I'm saying something like "OK, now go to G!" So, she took
a fine-tip felt-tip pen (I think...) and wrote the names of the
notes at the playing end of each tine. One could also do that
with numbers instead of the letter names.
I strive to be both of these people - both understanding, and
being intuitive. I like to be able to turn off the understanding
and to just DO, like swimming in a river. But then again,
if I am going to jump from this spot to somewhere else
altogether, calculating a trajectory does have its advantages.
