The Hugh Tracey 8-Note Kalimba

Thursday tips will begin featuring the 8-Note kalimba for the next some weeks. The 8-Note is a new arrival from Hugh Tracey, but other manufacturers such as Catania have been making 8-Note kalimbas for quite some time.

The 8-Note kalimba is perfect for learning, no matter where you are in your kalimba journey. The standard tuning is the "Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Ti-Do" scale, starting on C, so it is a natural partner to the soprano recorder.

This instrument is a fairly simple venue in which to try new ideas and experiments, and everything you learn on the 8-Note is directly applicable to the Alto and the Treble kalimbas. So, not only is it a great way to start on the kalimba, it is an instrument that you can go back to again and again as you ratchet up your kalimba understanding and musicianship.
