The kalimba has some very high frequency overtones. Children's ears are much more sensitive to very high frequencies, and I think that the sharp attack of the kalimba, which is rich in high frequency overtones, can sometimes bother children.
Most older people have lost a fair bit of high frequency response in their hearing, and this makes the kalimba's attack gentler for older folks.
