Just for Kids
Finding Christmas Gifts Just Got Easier

Kids with kalimbas
Some kids can do pretty well on adult instruments such as these Hugh Tracey Kalimbas.

Kalimbas in the hands of kids - it makes sense. But in this country most players discover the kalimba as adults. We'd have better kalimba players if more people started to play in their youth! This holiday season, you have the opportunity to turn some bright young kid into a kalimba player instead of an X-boxer or iPhone texter.

Just for Kids

To make it easy for you to pick something out for the special kid in your life, we have put several of our best items for kids in a category of their own: Just for Kids. Here you'll find storybooks, kalimbas, and CDs for young budding kalimba players.

These items are all fairly affordable. The books and CDs range from $15 to $25. Several of the kalimbas and karimbas are around $35 and $40, and the Hugh Tracey and box-mounted Goshen instruments range from $64 to $88.

By the way, the kalimbas (with a "L") tend to play western music better, while the karimbas (with an "R") are tuned to an ancient African tuning that plays African music better. Student karimbas come with 8 or 9 notes, the most basic 8 or 9 notes of the 17-note African-tuned karimba, and are great learning instruments for kids (as well as beginners of all ages!).

Lion on the Path Book

Hugh Tracey * The Lion on the Path Book

Hugh Tracey collected stories as he made his way around Africa, and told these stories on the radio in South Africa in the 1950s. Those original recordings were transcribed and published as a book: The Lion on the Path. Yes, the cover is vintage 1960s, but the African stories are timeless.

Ages 4 and up.

Lion on the Path CD

Hugh Tracey * The Lion on the Path CD

Hugh Tracey's original recordings of the traditional African stories he told on the radio were made available on a CD: The Lion on the Path, named for the story that includes a lion who gets hypnotized by the beautiful music of the kalimba. A classic resource for anyone interested in Africa and stories.

The Magical Music Box - Storybook and CD

The Magical Music Box is a delightful story written and told by Mark Holdaway of Kalimba Magic. Imagine little Johan's surprise when he discovers that the gift his parents had given him plays a different Christmas carol for each person who holds it. The music box seems to know everyone's favorite! This story is beloved by young and old alike. Includes CD with the 20 minute story, including the Christmas carols that accompany the story, played on a Hugh Tracey Bb Treble Kalimba.

Now, you can also get this book and CD with a Bb-tuned 6-note or 8-note kalimba, so your child or you can jam along with the music. If you want this option, click on the "Add a Kalimba" box near the bottom of the Magical Music Box product page.

Cat 6 Note

Catania 6-Note Kalimba

The Catania 6-Note kalimba is tuned to the C major pentatonic scale (or alternatively, to the F major pentatonic scale). It is robust, and can be dropped without going out of tune, as can all of the Catanias. Perfect for young or musically inexperienced players, it comes with a free 16-page numbers-based booklet that will help you play a few dozen songs.

Ages 5 and up.

Catania 8-Note Kalimba

Catania 8-Note Kalimba

It is amazing how much music you can make with one octave of the "Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do" C major scale on the Catania 8-Note kalimba. Not only will you learn about the kalimba, but you will also learn about music in general, becoming familiar with one of the basic building blocks of western music. Two different instructional books are available for this kalimba, one for 6 and up, the other is a bit more advanced.

Ages 6 and up.

Goshen 8-Note Box Kalimba

The Goshen kalimbas are real gems - great craftsmanship, made in the USA, and just very sweet instruments. The Goshen 8-Note kalimbas can use the same books as the Catania 8-Note kalimbas, but they are tuned to the D major scale (the boxes just sound better in D than in C).

Ages 6 and up.

Catania 8-Note Student Karimba

Catania 8-Note Student Karimba

The Catania 8-Note Student karimba starts out life as a regular 8-note kalimba, but we change its tuning to that of the lower row notes of the African karimba. If you are looking for an experience of African music, this is a good place to start. Student karimbas all come with our new "Student Karimba for Kids" book (16-pages, 20 songs, 20 downloadable MP3 files).

Ages 7 and up.

Goshen 8-Note Box Student Karimba

If you saw this karimba and thought "Hey, it looks just like the Goshen 8-Note box kalimba" (shown above, and spelled with an "L" not an "R"), you would be pretty much right - except that the tuning is totally different. Student karimbas have the tuning and note layout you need to make African music, and the Goshen 8-Note Box Student karimba has recently become one of my favorite instruments because of its simplicity and its clear, piercing tone. Student karimbas all come with our new "Student Karimba for Kids" book (16-pages, 20 songs, 20 downloadable MP3 files).

Ages 7 and up.

Goshen 9-Note Student Karimba

Goshen 9-Note Student Karimba

This is one of our best kalimba deals. The Goshen 9-Note Student karimba mounted on a flat board has very sweet metal tines - they are silky smooth, smoother than most other kalimbas. Student karimbas all come with our new "Student Karimba for Kids" book (16-pages, 20 songs, 20 downloadable MP3 files).

Ages 7 and up.
