The ALMA Telescope in Chile
The Altiplano above San Pedro de Atacama, at the base of the high peaks of the Chilean Andes, reaches 16,500 feet (5000 meters). Immediately to the west is the Atacama desert, one of the driest place on earth. In the 1990s, I worked tirelessly to help select this site for what is now known as the Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA), a radio telescope that will help shed light on the mysteries of the birth of stars, the life cycles of galaxies, and the evolution of the universe.

Bernie's Story
I would like to share with you the benefits I have found in playing the kalimba as a tool in my journey to sobriety. I have found it to be instrumental (no pun intended) in helping me and others deal with the challenges on the path of recovery.
by Kathryn Rambo, BC-MT
She rested her pocket sansula on her solar plexus and played and played and played. She said the music she made was first the song of panic, and then it transformed into the song of fear. Fear transformed into the song of helplessness and then into the song of sorrow and grief. At last she said it transformed into a song of release and then faith.

How did I come to the musical path I am on today? The stories I'll share, illustrated with music on kalimba, recorder, and other instruments, paint the picture of my spirituality experienced through music. Don't leave your instruments at home; we will make improvisational music and create a river of spirit flowing from each of our hearts.

My Leap of Faith Pays Off Big!
I started to learn about the Mbira Cycle in November 2010 from a Masters Thesis on Andrew Tracey, who studied this over 40 years ago. Days, weeks, months, I worked and worked at this, and gradually I began to swim in the waters of the Mbira Cycle... At the Tucson Folk Festival,I was asked if I could play kalimba on a traditional Shona piece. I ran and got all my kalimbas from my car, and was back in 5 minutes... And the contest: Two entries have been submitted. June 1 is the FINAL deadline.
