Come to Luminosity Studio in West Concord and learn about the Kalimba, or African thumb piano. Teacher Mark Holdaway will have several different types of kalimba for you to play. Some are so easy you just twiddle your thumbs and music comes out - prefect as a prelude to meditation or relaxation. You'll also learn some songs on the African Karimba, which is perhaps the most ancient type of metal-tined kalimba, a probable ancestor of the Mbira Dzavadzimu. And you'll learn some great tricks on the Hugh Tracey Kalimba, a well-made diatonic kalimba from South Africa with a western tuning, and capable of playing a lot of music.
If you have your own kalimba, bring it along to play. Also, bring your old and out-of-tune kalimbas, and Mark will do what he can to get them playing like new.
Kalimbas will be available for purchase at a discount.
Register by emailing: andrea("at")luminosityhealing.com
Directions to the studio will be emailed to you upon receiving your registration.
While in Boston, I will also be performing a concert with my friend from Tucson, Patricia Morrison, and her musical partner, Mary Shapiro, from Washington, DC.
You can download a flier for the April 2 concert in Boston.
