BMWs Mbira Tablature

B. Michael Williams' New Mbira Tablature

B. Michael Williams writes some of the best mbira instructional materials. Following up his book from several years ago, he is now offering instructional downloads which include the tablature for several songs in a PDF file and MP3s of how the songs and each variation go. Volume I of his mbira tablature transcriptions includes the traditional Shona mbira songs Baya Wabaya, Kariga Mombe Yekare, Nyamamusango, and Shumba, while Volume II includes the songs Hangaiwa, Shumba YaNgwasha, Chipindura, and Bukatiende.

Each song has many variations, and some have kushaura and kutsinhira parts. Each volume is $20, four songs, and 34 pages, and each is enough to keep you busy for months. Profits go to Erica Azims organization, MBIRA, which supports African musicians.

At some point in the distant future, I will see if any of these songs can be arranged for the Hugh Tracey kalimbas.

Martin Klabundes Adungu Book

Martin Klabunde's Adungu Book

Martin Klabunde has been teaching himself the Adungu, a north-eatern African harp, for the last several years, and now he is coming out with a book on how to play it. He also imports the instruments from Africa. They are beautiful and reasonably priced. If you are interested in getting one of these instruments, they are available at his Collective Awakening website.

Martin also sells Akogos - Ugandan pentatonic kalimbas, and Djembe drums.
